Modern Warfare 4's DMZ arrives as our Call of Duty crowd grows fivefold

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4's extraction mode, DMZ, went live this week. Players are already fighting over Possum, a trait that lets you get back up once per match after being fully killed. On steamplayti.me, Call of Duty went from 5 players the week before to 25 this week, and our two busiest days of the past fortnight came right as DMZ arrived.
- 25 of our players played Call of Duty this week, up from 5 the week before
- About 200 hours played in seven days, roughly 17 times the previous week's 12
- 21 of those 25 players hadn't played it before in the time we've tracked them
From a trickle to a squad
Two weeks ago Call of Duty barely registered with our players. At most three of them played it on any given day, a couple of days nobody did, and the daily total never got past a few hours. That changed on October 16, when nine players turned up.
It wasn't a straight line up from there. The count jumped to 13 the next day, slipped back to 9 for two days, then hit 15 and 16. Over the last seven days, 25 steamplayti.me players put in about 200 hours, against 5 players and 12 hours the week before. That's roughly 17 times as much play. And 21 of those 25 hadn't touched the game before in the time we've been tracking them.
DMZ week
The rise started a few days before DMZ arrived, so the new mode doesn't explain all of it. Still, our two busiest days were the ones as it landed: on October 20, 15 players logged about 50 hours, and on October 21, 16 players logged about 47.
When our players do sit down with it, they stay a while. A typical day of Call of Duty runs a bit over 2 hours, and roughly 1 in 4 of those days goes past three and a half.
It's very much a shooter crowd. About 1 in 3 of them also play Counter-Strike 2, and a handful split their time with WARDOGS, ARC Raiders and Deadlock.
